one space, two space

I learned at work yesterday that it is no longer correct to put 2 spaces between sentences.
What I wonder is this: Who the heck gets to decide these things?!
I remember hearing talk about this several years ago, but I don't remember exactly what it was. Anyway, apparently it's real, as my company is actually re-doing all of our external correspondence to reflect the "one space" rule. Thankfully, they do not necessarily expect us to implement the change for internal purposes. Yeah...I'd like to see them try to enforce that. :) Actually, no I wouldn't.
Just for fun, I have been trying it out since...the beginning of this post, and I'm finding it very difficult. I don't want to be typing incorrectly, but I'm a creature of habit and I really just don't understand the reasoning behind this change.
Has anyone else heard about this? Any idea what the deal is?

I have always despised the two space rule and consequently I have just avoided it. This will allow me to make this transition fairly easily!

I have not heard of this until now, and I'm kind of shocked. However, my reaction was similar to yours, who does get to decide this? Its probably going to be hard for me to switch as I haven't even typed this comment "correctly"

I didn't know that there was a two space rule. I've always put just one space before all of my sentences. Mom says that the only sure thing is change. I've been trying to ignore it but it seems to come back to haunt me.

zachary is waiting for the rule to change to no spaces between words. It is very hard to read his handwriting since he has already applied this rule to himself.

I haven't heard of it but it doesn't surprise me. "They" are changing things all the time - pronounciations of words, for instance. Say -- huge, not, uuge. That one drives me crazy. I think "they" do it just to see how much power "they" have. I suspect "they" are communists. I don't really approve of change.
